October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Right Surgeon is Key to New Breasts after Mastectomy

SAN CARLOS, CA:
This year, more than 211,000 women will hear, "You have breast cancer." Many, even those who identify their cancer early on, will lose a breast. Some will lose both. In almost all cases, women can have new breasts created; finding the right plastic surgeon is the most important step.

Kathy Steligo, author of The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook says, "Women often go with the first plastic surgeon they see, not realizing another surgeon might offer a different procedure that may produce better results."

"New breasts can be created in many different ways," Steligo says. "What's right for your friend or neighbor may not be the best technique for you."

Steligo advises women to do their homework before seeing a plastic surgeon. Understand your choices after mastectomy. Consider the benefits and limitations of each procedure. Know how the surgery will be done and what to expect during recovery. Consult with several surgeons. Then make your own decision about what is best for you.

"Choose a surgeon you trust. One who is skilled and compassionate and listens to your concerns," she says. "It will make a world of difference in how satisfied you are with the reconstruction experience and your new breast."

Steligo's book arms readers with information they need about mastectomy and reconstruction. She offers seven tips for choosing the right plastic surgeon:

  • Interview two, three, or more surgeons who specialize in breast reconstruction.
  • Ask breast cancer patients and professionals to recommend surgeons.
  • Verify each surgeon's certification by an accredited organization.
  • Make the most of your consultation time. Take a list of questions with you.
  • Ask a friend or family member to come along to listen and take notes.
  • Review photos of the surgeon's best and worst reconstructions.
  • If you don't feel comfortable with one surgeon, find another.
